How does Fireball work?
You point at a spot within range. Each creature in a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on that point makes a Dexterity saving throw, taking 8d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success.
The fire spreads around corners. It ignites flammable objects that are not being worn or carried.
Targeting without griefing your party
- Count the radius carefully — 20 feet is larger than new players expect.
- Elevated targets and pits change who is in the sphere.
- Evocation Wizards (Sculpt Spells) can protect allies; other casters must aim at the edge of the enemy clump.
Upcasting Fireball
Each slot above 3rd adds 1d6 damage. A 5th-level Fireball (10d6) is still often better than a weaker 5th-level niche spell when you need a clean area wipe.
When not to Fireball
- Enemies are mixed with allies and you cannot sculpt.
- The monsters resist or are immune to fire.
- You need the 3rd-level slot for Counterspell insurance against a legendary caster.
Fireball vs other blasts
Fireball wins on simplicity and damage density at 3rd level. Lightning Bolt is a line; Spirit Guardians is concentration attrition; Fireball is the “delete this room” button.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Fireball require line of sight to every creature?
You choose a point you can see (unless a feature says otherwise). Creatures behind full cover relative to the burst’s spread may still be affected because the fire spreads around corners — ask your DM for edge cases with sealed rooms.
Can Fireball melt treasure?
It can ignite flammable objects not worn or carried. Fragile loot in the open is at risk; worn magic items are generally fine.
Is Fireball still good at high levels?
Yes as an upcast payload, but legendary resistances, fire immunity, and tighter maps make positioning and spell choice more important than nostalgia.
