Dimension Door 5E Guide

Edition note: This guide targets 2014 5E (legacy PHB-style rules). If your table uses the 2024 Player's Handbook, confirm wording, class lists, and any renamed features before locking a build.

Dimension Door is the long-range escape hatch. Teleport yourself (and optionally one willing creature) up to 500 feet to a spot you can describe — no line of sight required.

This Dimension Door 5E guide covers passenger rules, bad landings, and when cheaper teleports win.

How does Dimension Door work?

You teleport yourself from your current location to any other spot within range. You arrive at exactly the spot desired. It can be a place you can see, one you can visualize, or one you can describe by stating distance and direction (for example “200 feet straight downward).

You can bring along objects as long as their weight doesn’t exceed what you can carry. You can also bring one willing creature of your size or smaller who is carrying gear up to its carrying capacity. The creature must be within 5 feet of you when you cast.

If you would arrive in an occupied space, you and any passenger each take force damage and the spell fails to teleport you.

Best uses

  • Bail from a TPK hallway to a known safe room
  • Skip a vertical dungeon climb with a passenger
  • Extract a downed ally (willing) from melee

Misty Step is the cheap combat scoot. Fly is sustained air time. Dimension Door is the “get us out of this wing button.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to see the destination?

No. Visualization or distance/direction descriptions work — which is why it’s famous for “straight up 500 feet and “through the wall into the vault plays (DM permitting for solid objects — you must arrive in an unoccupied space you can occupy).

Can I cast it while restrained?

Verbal only — if you can speak, you can try. Being unable to move doesn’t block the teleport itself.

Is it better than Thunder Step?

Thunder Step is louder, shorter, and damages the departure area. Dimension Door is quieter (verbal) and longer range.
